Whether we call it a tile or a pixel, artists have been depicting images by building up squares for thousands of years.

Super Mario Bros was a video game that came out on the gaming console Nintendo in 1985. It came out after the success of the 1983 arcade title, Mario Bros.

The games were designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka (Japenese artists and game designers). Shigeru Miyamoto also had designed the arcade classic, Donkey Kong.

Arcade games were coin operated consoles that people could play at stores. Click the Mario picture to link to the loooong history of gaming consoles.

Super Mario Bros was made using pixels, or colored squares that are placed within a digital grid. Pixels are still used today when you take digital photographs, but are simply too small for the human eye to see.

Below are different examples of Pixel Art. Our task is to copy what we see, scaling up to a sheet of paper, and then scaling each tile to the size of a Post-it.
